Division & Classifications
General
In Ireland the Transition Altitude (TA) is 5000ft. The Transition Layer is calculated based on local air pressure.
Division
Flight Information Regions:
- Shannon Flight Information Region (at and below FL245)
- Shannon Upper Information Region (above FL245)
Control Area's
Shannon Control Area:
- Shannon Lower Control Area (at and below FL245)
- Shannon Upper Control Area (at and above FL250 up to FL660)
Dublin Control Area:
- Dublin ACC North (at and below FL245)
- Dublin ACC South (at and below FL245)
North and South are divided by the centre line of runway 10/28.
Control Zones:
- Connaught, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Shannon, Sligo and Waterford.
Classification of airspaces
ATS airspaces are classified and designated in accordance with the following:
Class A:
- IFR flights only are permitted,
- All flights are subject to air traffic control service,
- Separation is provided.
Airspace Classification A comprises:
- Shannon Oceanic Transition Area (SOTA) at and above FL55 to Unlimited.
- Northern Oceanic Transition Area (NOTA) at and above FL55 to Unlimited.
Class B:
Class C:
- IFR and VFR flights are permitted,
- All flights are subject to air traffic control service,
- IFR flights are separated from other IFR flights and from VFR flights,
- VFR flights are separated from IFR flights and receive traffic information in respect of other VFR flights.
Airspace Classification C comprises:
- Shannon UTA FL245 - FL660
- Shannon CTA up to FL245
- Dublin CTA at and below FL245
- CTR's Cork, Dublin and Shannon
- CTR's Connaught, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Sligo and Waterford during promulgated hours of activation.
Class D:

Class F:
Class G:
- IFR and VFR flights are permitted, and receive flight information if requested.
Airspace Classification G comprises:
- All airspace within Shannon FIR, excluding airspace classified C as described above.
