Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System Procedures

LAPES Drops are normally performed by C130 Hercules aircraft over flat terrain. The cargo inside the aircraft is pulled out by parachutes attached to the rear of the cargo.

To simulate this drop, a flight video is required of the flyover of the drop zone. The aircraft must be flying at between 10 to 20 feet with full flaps and gear down at the slowest possible speed.

Once the drop zone is cleared, the aircraft raises it's gear, flaps and climbs to a safe altitude where the flight video is closed, saved and sent to the applicable commanding officer for verification.
